Overview
Chief Legal Officers have a special role in advising executives and directors on risk. This may include such risks as financing risks, merger and acquisition risk, and risks that result from broad economic, technological and political changes. We are fortunate to have two esteemed panelists from U.S. Venture and SC Johnson sharing their unique perspective on this challenge in the context of advising private company executives and directors.

Tom currently services as the Chief Legal Officer and Corporate Secretary of U.S. Ventures Holdings, Inc., an innovative leader in the distribution of energy, tires, lubricants, and transportation products. Prior to U.S. Venture, he served as Senior Vice President/Legal Counsel for the transportation and LTL business units of XPO, Inc. He was also counsel to the law firm of Conner & Winters and served as Vice President and General Counsel of Merchandising, Market and Supply Chain for Walmart, Inc. and Associate General Counsel for McLane Company, Inc. Tom is a licensed pilot and a veteran of the United States Air Force and serves on the board of trustees for Trinity University.

Sue Tran is a retired Senior Vice President - General Counsel & Secretary of SC Johnson & Son, Inc., a $10B family-owned global consumer products company. During her 25-year tenure at SCJ, she supported every aspect of the company’s business, including M&A, enterprise risk management, cybersecurity, global compliance, and corporate governance. Her expertise spans the globe, having spent years working to grow the business in Asia, South America, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and the Commonwealth of Independent States. Prior to joining SCJ, she was in private practice at Foley & Lardner.
Sue has served as a member of the board of Racine Commercial Airport Corporation, and she has served on a number of non-profit boards, including Habitat for Humanity, Girl Scouts of Wisconsin Southeast, Health Care Network, Racine Art Museum, Racine County Economic Development Corporation, and Literacy Services of Wisconsin. Sue is also an angel investor, focused on supporting female founders.

Rebecca (“Riv”) Goldman is a member of the Wisconsin PDA Executive Committee, serving as co-chair of the Membership and Engagement Committee. Having held executive roles in public and private companies in the law, finance and strategic planning, Riv is now focusing on governance by serving on non-profit and private company boards. Riv was recently named the Chairman of the Board for Center for Independence in Milwaukee. She holds a BA from Stanford University, an MBA from the Kellogg School at Northwestern University and a JD from the University of Dayton.
